Jr. Youth Mural
A Mural project with the Junior Youth in my neighborhood.
First Draft
we tried spray painting, it was the first time using airesol for most of the group so this was a fun learning activity and good start as it helped us lose the fear of painting directly on a wall!
we learned that if we hold the can too close to the wall we get drips, ultimately we opted for using acrylic paint as we were more comfortable with that medium and it was most economical for the animator. We went to home depot together and picked out some colors, got a couple of the smaller can options and other materials we would need
BUT FIRST!
we needed to prime the wall and make sure the first draft was not hard to cover up with the new mural. we painted the baseboards white again and this time we had the know how! We also painted over the parts of the walls that other children using the community house had spraypainted without permission. oops! We learned our mistake and made sure to hide the painting materials in case any children got the urge to paint on the walls.

Reference photos
we wanted our mural to represent the community, so we took reference photos of what the average junior youth in our neighborhood looks like... US!
references are for reference
Nathaniel took an amazing route with this reference photo, using it to create a toonish version of himself in his own personal style, how I admire his artistry!
we all have a role
some of us were in charge of the music, some of us were there to play foosball with when we needed a break, and some of us were on brush washing duty! we used a projector to trace some of the images, NO its not cheating, its called being resourceful.
Lettering
outlined By Phoenix, filled in red by the rest of the group. teamwork!
dedication
it was hot out, and we had to keep the garage door open for the light and air flow, but there we were!
although none of us can claim to know what this mural would look like EXACTLY, we had a general plan and stopped organically here. what do you think? I'm so proud of our group mural!
